VL53L1X Time-of-Flight (ToF) Laser Ranging Sensor Module
High-Precision Long-Range Infrared Distance Sensor for Arduino, ESP32, and Robotics
The VL53L1X Laser Ranging Sensor Module is a state-of-the-art Time-of-Flight (ToF) distance measurement sensor powered by STMicroelectronics' FlightSense™ technology. Unlike traditional optical sensors that rely on reflected light intensity, the VL53L1X calculates distance by measuring the precise time taken for invisible 940 nm laser pulses to bounce off a target and return. This accurate phase-shift methodology allows the module to measure distances up to 400 cm (4 meters) at high sampling rates up to 50 Hz, remaining virtually immune to target color, surface reflectivity, or ambient light interference.
Designed for effortless integration over an I2C interface, the breakout board features built-in voltage regulation and logic level shifting—making it fully compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers like Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi. Its programmable Region-of-Interest (ROI) allows users to narrow the sensing Field-of-View (FOV) or implement multi-zone spatial awareness. Supported by comprehensive open-source libraries, the VL53L1X is an ideal hardware solution for mobile robot obstacle avoidance, drone altitude holding, automated gesture recognition, and smart proximity triggers.
