MCU-055 BNO055 9DOF Absolute Orientation Sensor Module
Smart 9-Axis Motion Sensor with Onboard Sensor Fusion Engine
The MCU-055 BNO055 9DOF Absolute Orientation Sensor Module is an advanced 9-degrees-of-freedom motion tracking breakout board powered by Bosch Sensortec’s BNO055 System-in-Package (SiP). Unlike traditional IMUs that output raw acceleration and gyroscope data requiring complex fusion code, the BNO055 integrates a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, a 3-axis geomagnetic magnetometer, and an onboard 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 microcontroller running high-speed sensor fusion algorithms.
This hardware fusion engine processes raw sensor inputs onboard and directly outputs fully compensated, 3D absolute orientation data in Euler angles (Heading, Roll, Pitch) and Quaternions via I2C or UART TTL serial—drastically reducing microcontroller processing overhead.
Key Features
Hardware Sensor Fusion: Onboard 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 core executes complex sensor fusion internally, eliminating the need for complex Kalman or Madgwick algorithms on your host microcontroller.
True 9DOF Motion Tracking: Integrates a 14-bit triaxial accelerometer, a 16-bit triaxial gyroscope, and a triaxial geomagnetic sensor into a single IC.
Direct Orientation Output: Provides clean, fused orientation data in Euler Angles (Yaw/Heading, Pitch, Roll), Quaternions, Linear Acceleration, Gravity Vectors, and Magnetic Field vectors.
Dual Communication Interface: Supports both standard I2C and UART TTL Serial interfaces for seamless connection to microcontrollers.
Onboard Power Regulation: Includes a 3.3V voltage regulator and level-shifting circuitry, allowing safe operation with both 3.3V (ESP32, Raspberry Pi) and 5V (Arduino) development boards.
Self-Calibration Routines: Continuously auto-calibrates in the background to compensate for magnetic interference and sensor drift.
Typical Applications
Robotics & Autonomous Navigation: Heading and navigation stabilization for AGVs, balancing robots, and rover platforms.
VR / AR & Head Tracking: High-speed 3D spatial tracking for virtual reality headsets and motion controllers.
UAV & Drone Flight Controllers: Accurate pitch, roll, and magnetic compass heading data for flight control systems.
Gimbal & Camera Stabilization: Multi-axis motorized orientation holding and active camera leveling.
